Flying Fox Marathon 2017 Afford sponsor border

History

Stone Master Marathoners was founded in 1977 as a running club specifically for veteran marathon runners. The Flying Fox was chosen as the club emblem, and the Latin motto (Sapientia Atque Levitas) means wisdom and lightness of heart, or cunning and low body weight, whichever you prefer.

The First Flying Fox Marathon was held in October 1979 at Kidsgrove, Stoke-on-Trent and hosted the British Veterans Athletics Federation Marathon Championship. In its second year, the course was moved to Sandbach, Cheshire before coming to Stone where it continued until the last running of the marathon in 1994.

I hope that you enjoy looking at a few photographs from the archives. I'm on there, but no clues!
